We are pleased to announce the opening of our 2016-2017 online registration for The Bernice & Mannie Rabovsky Religious School at Congregation B'nai Tzedek.  We have made some exciting changes to our program for this coming year which we believe will help make your children’s Jewish education more meaningful and relevant to their lives and interests, including incorporating experiential group activities on Sundays and movement-based Hebrew learning midweek (see below for more on these!).  We encourage all of our parents to register their children as soon as they can in order to help us ensure we are able to have appropriate staffing and materials to best educate your children. 

Please read this entire letter thoroughly as it includes curriculum changes and scheduling options:

Sunday Classes
Sunday classes for Kindergarten – 7th Grade will meet from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm.  We will do our best to honor one (1) mutual placement request for Sunday classes. This placement request must be mutual and in writing. All requests must be submitted by July 31, 2016, to Natacha Myers at [email protected]

To make our Sunday school curriculum more accessible and engaging for our 3rd – 6th Grade students we are piloting a new hugim program—experiential group activities which will allow students to explore different ways Judaism can relate to their lives.  We will offer a variety of options which will allow these students to find their own paths into Jewish life.  Please join us after drop off on our first day of Sunday Religious School, Sunday, September 11, for a Back to School Parent Breakfast followed by a parent meeting to hear more about what we will be offering and how it will work. 

As part of our focus on developing a foundational knowledge and love of Judaism, our Kindergarten – 2nd Grade classes will continue to explore Torah, mitzvot, holidays, Hebrew, and more through hands-on, engaging activities.

Students in 7th Grade will attend Sunday morning classes through January 29th.

Midweek Hebrew
During our Hebrew classes, we will be seeking to incorporate some of the principles of Hebrew Through Movement, a trend in congregational education which is based on the idea that people learn languages by relating vocabulary to body motions (for example, learning the difference between the Hebrew words lashevet and la’amod by sitting down and standing up, respectively).  By utilizing more movement-based learning, we are aiming to better engage and more efficiently educate the students in the Hebrew language.

We will again be offering Wednesday Hebrew classes for 3rd – 6th Grades from 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm.  For those students who are able and interested, we will open at 4:15 pm and offer snacks and the opportunity to socialize and/or play games with friends until class starts.

Alternatively, Monday and Tuesday Hebrew Small Group Sessions (3rd – 6th Grades) will meet either from 4:30 pm - 5:40 pm or from 5:25 pm - 6:35 pm each day.  These classes are for students who may benefit from learning in a smaller class environment or students who have a conflict on Wednesday afternoons.  These new times are in response to feedback we have received and will include a short prayer service from 5:25 – 5:40 pm for both Small Groups.  There is a $650 fee in addition to Religious School tuition for these classes and their availability is subject to adequate enrollment for each class.

We also offer one-on-one private tutoring with one of our teachers for students in certain circumstances at a rate of $75/session, which will be billed for 25 sessions at the beginning of the school year.  If choosing this option, please contact the Religious School office to schedule your child’s sessions.

When registering for the Midweek Hebrew, please indicate your choice of class on the registration form.   

Upper School
7th – 10th Graders will meet for classes on Wednesday evenings.  Students are asked to join the congregational minyan at 6:15 pm, followed by dinner at 6:30 pm (provided by CBT) and class from 7:00 – 8:15 pm.

Parent Involvement
We want our parents to feel as much a part of our children’s religious education as possible.  We will have plenty of opportunities for parents to get involved, including serving as a room parent, planning and/or hosting an event for your child’s grade, helping with our hugim, serving on the Education Committee, and more.  Please let us know of your special talents and interests in helping out in the comments section of the registration form.

Registration Form 
To begin registration, please scroll down to the bottom of this letter to the "click here to begin button."  Those who register their child(ren) by Friday, June 10th will be billed an early bird activities and materials fee of $115 per student. Registrations received after June 10, 2016, will be billed the regular rate for the activities and materials fee of $130 per student.

Non-Member Policy 
The Bernice & Mannie Rabovsky Religious School serves the members of Congregation B'nai Tzedek. At the present time, individuals with children in grades K - 6 who have not joined the synagogue may register their children for our Religious School for one year. This will give them the opportunity to become familiar with our congregation and programs. Class days and times will be given to non-members based on availability. At the end of that school year, it is necessary for non-members to join the congregation. This will enable them to enroll their child(ren) for the following year. Bar/Bat Mitzvah dates are only assigned to children who are members of the synagogue, who have attended our Religious School or one of the Jewish day schools, and whose parents are in good standing with the synagogue.

**The Synagogue Members will meet on May 19th during the annual meeting to approve the congregational budget for the 2016-2017 fiscal year. Please note that except where noted above, the rates for the proposed tuition for the coming school year as approved by the Board of Directors is identical to the tuition in 2015-2016.
