Education | B地ai Mitzvah Overview
The philosophy of Congregation B'nai Tzedek is that the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony marks the welcoming of a young member of our B'nai tzedek family into our congregation as an adult. The celebration of this time-honored tradition and rite of passage takes place with our entire community during regular Shabbat services.
To be eligible to become a Bar/Bat Mitzvah the child, male or female, must be 13 years old and Jewish in accordance with Jewish law, as defined by the Conservative movement and interpreted by the Rabbi of the synagogue.
Having a child become Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a special and memorable day for a Jewish family. It represents the culmination of many years of study and preparation, and the beginning of your child’s participation and responsibility in the Jewish community as a Jewish adult.
To mark this occasion, the Bar/Bat Mitzvah is given the honor of participating in the congregation’s Shabbat morning service by chanting from the Torah, the Haftarah and giving the D’var Torah. The program is overseen by Cantor Kapell and directed by Liane Aaron. Our goal is to prepare our children and families so they understand and appreciate the significance of the occasion, and learn synagogue skills which make them feel comfortable and knowledgeable in the worship setting.
